Official Statement

JUNE 20, 2018– Since the adoption of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees in 1951, there has been a universally agreed framework for the status and treatment of refugees and asylum seekers globally. The rights of individuals and families to seek safety is also noted in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In our work in Europe and the Middle East, we regularly meet families with young children. These families have fled war, violence, uncertainty, and even the imminent threat of death in their home countries. Today and always, Carry the Future stands in solidarity and support of refugee children and families.

Despite the newly signed Executive Order to end family separation at the US border, there is much work to be done to support the families already separated, as well as to ensure asylum seekers are treated with dignity. In any case, the separation of children from their families at the US border threatens the foundation of the Refugee Convention, Declaration of Human Rights, and also goes against CTF’s mission of extending dignity and respect to refugee families. Children who have fled war and violence deserve to be welcomed to safety and security. That does not mean separating them from their parents and guardians.

We Stand United in Solidarity

The Carry the Future Leadership Team, comprised of the Board of Directors and Chiefs and Deputy Chiefs, is actively monitoring the situation at the border. Currently, we are identifying opportunities where our organization can be effective and that also align with our mission. We are proud that so many volunteers, staff, and supporters within Carry the Future’s global community have found ways to actively support front-line organizations working on the ground to support these families.

We believe in a world where a child’s safety and future always come first. Because of that, we encourage all of our followers, volunteers, and donors to continue to support refugee families throughout the world, whether they are in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, or in our own hometowns. Raise awareness. Stay involved. Stay informed.

There is no such thing as other people’s children. Today and every day, collectively, we will Carry the Future. #keepfamiliestogether
